Drawing and Painting Workshops with
English Artist David Napp
Painting and drawing with children is an enlightening experience...
You don’t only teach, you learn as well. Whatever preconceptions you may have when you enter the classroom, the pupils will constantly surprise you.
Picasso spent his whole life trying to get back to painting like a child, and this was not without reason: their ability to interpret is totally pure and naive, uninfluenced by pre-conceived ideas.
With this in mind I try to instill in children a notion of what is possible: to wow them with colour, light and movement, with the idea that anything is within their grasp.
But at the same time, as did Picasso under the tutorage of his father (who was also an artist), you have to start with the basics of observational drawing.
To sidestep it is like running before you can walk, and my intention is to coax the children patiently forwards, towards that discipline.
It doesn’t mean art can’t be fun, but it does take time and maturity to engage with the necessary level of concentration and patience. To look, perceive and interpret are tantamount to a successful result.
I have taught all ages: from primary school to adult studies, up to Art College, not only in the UK but also in Europe.
All levels of study have their own particular demands and constraints, and in my teaching I constantly adapt my approach to each situation.
As every budding artist’s direction develops, the advice they need becomes more individually honed. Putting pupils on the right track at this early age is an essential part of their artistic future, and will help your school towards your Artsmark goal if you are in
Although English by birth, I have spent many years in
Europe. I speak French and Italian fluently, which has been of great benefit to my teaching across cultures.

We have worked with David several times now and it has always been a pleasure. The children have been inspired by the quality of his own artwork and have really enjoyed testing out the new skills he teaches them during the lesson. I would recommend hiring David for an art workshop.
